Arte Pizza in Canggu, Bali – a creative spot with local art and charitable giving, where the Margherita looks beautiful but falls a little flat on flavour.
Arte Pizza has a presence in both Ubud and Canggu, and this time I visited the Canggu spot. The setting is warm and creative, with local art on display and a nice touch of them donating part of their profits to charity. It’s a relaxed and welcoming place to sit down for a meal.
The Margherita looked great when it arrived. The base was clean with no excess flour or polenta, and there was a nice balance of sauce, cheese, and basil across the top. The crust had a bit of char, giving it that wood‑fired look, and it struck a good balance between crunchy and chewy. Structurally it held up fairly well, even if it leaned towards being a little floppy in the centre.
Visually, it ticked all the boxes, but the flavour didn’t quite keep pace. The sauce in particular was a bit bland, and the cheese, while fine, didn’t bring much character to the pizza. The crust was the highlight, well baked and tasty, but overall the flavour was a little muted compared to how beautiful it looked.
We also tried their zucchini and olive pizza, which had much more going on. It was vibrant, fresh, and a lot more enjoyable than the Margherita. Arte Pizza is a charming place with a good cause behind it, but for me, the Margherita could use more punch in the flavour to match the strong first impression.
