Tony's New York Pizza

Tony's is popping up all over Bali, bringing New York-style pizza to the island. This visit was to the Seminyak branch, on the same street as Wild Habit. The big pies in the window are the headline act, but it turns out they do small and medium sizes too — I went with a medium rather than grabbing a slice. At 50k for a slice against about 60k for a whole nine-inch, the slices feel like the expensive way to do it, and a slice sitting in the window is never as fresh as a pizza straight out of the oven.

We started with the garlic knots, which were really tasty and came with a runny red sauce for dipping — a fun way to kick things off.

Being New York style, there's no puffy Neapolitan crust here. The base is thin and very crispy, and the cheese was the highlight for me: melted mozzarella with grated parmesan over the top, which gives it a nice savoury edge. It's a simple pizza done fairly well.

The letdown is underneath. There's a generous dusting of flour and semolina on the base, and while it didn't bother me at first, the more I ate, the more it took over — it's the first thing your tongue meets in every bite, and it leaves a floury taste that detracts from the rest.

A good pizza and a fun change from the usual Napoli spots, but nothing special, and maybe a little dear for what it is.
