“A great tomato sauce, a menu that teaches you something, and a blue cheese pizza to skip.”

Unconventional Pizza in Pererenan was a very cool little place: funky decorations, neon signs, wallpapered tables, and an intense Italian owner, as the best ones usually are. We had a good chat with him about running a pizza business in Bali while our order came together. The menu was half the fun. Alongside the usual pizzas there were styles you rarely see outside Italy, like pizza al padellino, focaccias and fried pizzas, so you came away knowing a bit more about pizza than when you walked in.

We took ours home, a five-minute walk. The Margherita had big pieces of basil baked into it, and the San Marzano tomatoes were sweet and delicious, so the flavour was very good. The dough was the weak spot. There was no crunch at all, just chew, no real puff in the crust, and the rim was inconsistent. The bottom had a little flour on it but no semolina, which I like.

The other pizza was a cheese pizza with solid spots of blue cheese, so strongly blue that we wondered at first whether it had gone off. It hadn't, but it wasn't very good, and it was dear. With a Margherita at about 95k and the blue cheese pizza more than double that, two pizzas and a small fried pasta bite came to 430k.

The Margherita was better than most we'd had around then, and the place had real personality. Sadly, Unconventional has since closed.
